Ben Maisel – Potter

My name is Ben Maisel and I have been creating pottery for over three decades. My journey began as a one night a week, artistic getaway from my regular duties as an elementary school teacher and father of two young children. I had no artistic training, and just took a 10 week course at the local community center. Needless to say, I got the bug and have been gradually expanding my repertoire in clay ever since.

Pottery has evolved into a central theme of my life. In the early stages of my learning the craft, I was content to hone my skills and style by making bowls, mugs, plates, and other utilitarian ware. I feel as if I’ve developed a look that’s unique, and recognizable, and of a quality that I can be proud of. More recently, I’ve delved into the design of more challenging forms, such as pitchers, casserole dishes, lidded jars, garlic roasters and more. My curiosity has taken me into the complex world of crystalline glazes, and even more deeply into the magical alchemy of raku.

I’ve always loved adventures and consider myself for curious person. I love to backpack and discover hidden wonders in the wilderness.

For me, pottery taps into that curiosity in a similar way. It’s physical and tactile, There is a sense of freedom that comes with choosing which direction to go throughout the process of creating a piece. I am most comfortable creating what pops into my head, rather than working as a production potter, or taking special orders.

What gives me the most satisfaction, however, is the joy my work brings to other people. I love gifting friends, family, and neighbors, and when one of them says that they drink out of my mug every day, it fills my “cup” to the brim!
